Coach Trainee Program(Mentor Program)
The mission of the Skating Club of CNY’s coach trainee program is to help guide our current and past home club skaters into a career of coaching. By going through our trainee program, our future coaches will be able to learn the skills of coaching by shadowing some of our current staff professionals.
SCCNY Members Under 21
Our home club skaters who are under 21, may apply for our coach trainee program. These skaters must be a minimum of 16 years old to start the program and have achieved the following minimum level requirements:
- passed pre silver skating skills(formerly intermediate moves in the field)
- passed juvenile free skate or have competed at a pre juvenile plus level
- If coaching dance, must have passed silver partnered pattern dance
Trainee must be a member in good standing and continuing their personal growth as a skater through lessons with a private coach. Trainees will be required to purchase liability insurance through USFSA and complete the USFSA Core Certification program. If over 18, trainee must complete a background check through USFSA, and complete Safesport training.
Skaters who complete this program will be considered a SCCNY junior staff member until they turn 18. At that time, they will become a SCCNY staff professional.
Trainees must fill out the application for the Coach Trainee Program and turn it into the board prior to starting the program.
Current/Past SCCNY Members 21 and over
The Skating Club of CNY welcomes our current and past members who are interested in a career coaching our skaters. This pathway is for skaters who have either not had any coaching experience or whose experience is very limited. The steps for becoming a SCCNY staff professional are as follows:
- Email the board stating your desire to become one of our staff professionals. This email should include your resume(skating and coaching history is most important), the name of 2 coaches who are willing to guide you in your journey, and the disciplines you are interested in specializing in.
- Register as a guest coach. The following requirements for compliance must be met: Safesport training, USFSA background check and liability insurance, USFSA Coach Core Certification completed, and have a current USFSA number. You will need to enroll in COACH ICE prior to attending any test sessions or competitions(unless only coaching LTS).
- Guest coach for at least 6 months working with skaters as a secondary coach. Utilize the coaches that you selected in your email to help give you guidance during this 6 month time period.
- At the end of the 6 months, you must provide letters of recommendations from any two coaches(may not be immediate family) stating why they feel you would be a good addition to the SCCNY staff professional roster.
- The board will then review those letters and vote to either accept you at that time or not. If not accepted, you may continue as a guest coach and try again at a later date.
